Filtalon SIS-150 Filtration System
Pesky insects and foreign matter in the atmosphere entering a processing area have long posed problems for the food, nutritional and pharmaceutical manufacturing industries. With traditional fly-screen mesh not quite hitting the mark, a significant paradigm shift was needed when thinking of solutions for how to better control the initial air intake of buildings that required highly effective ways to control insect ingress. Thus, the Filtalon SIS-150 System was born.
Our task was to create a solution that would eliminate the ingress of small insects that could present a food safety risk to the customers product downstream. Filtercorp International Limited utilised their four decades of knowledge and understanding of air filtration, ventilation and the air handling requirements for the food manufacturing and nutritional industries to develop a solution to achieve the objective, with the least impact on air flow and in a cost-effective manner.
Our solution was not a traditional frame and filter bag solution. Our Solution involved a cell plate made from 4mm Aluminium or Stainless Steel that would be permanently fixed to the existing frame adjacent to the louvers and a filter that incorporated technology suitable for the manufacturing sector which would snap into the cell plate. The way the cell plate is mounted, and the seal offered by the filters would ensure any insects were restricted from entering the plenum area altogether.
This style of filter offered many advantages; the ability to make the filter material in optional pore sizes, a speedy change of filters, a seal with less than 5-micron bypass and the ability to be cleaned easily and less frequently, going from monthly to annually for some customers.
The Filter material is a clear ether based thermoplastic polyurethane, suitable for food contact and resistant to moisture and bacterial growth.
Pressure drop was a major concern, however after testing we determined that using the 150-micron pore sized material the initial pressure drop was approx. 25 Pa, and dirty the pressure was measured at 28.5 Pa. Finally, the overall cost was calculated and was comparable to installing a traditional style filter bank for insect control.
The SIS-150 System is now utilised successfully in many different industry sectors such as Healthcare, Nutrition plants, Dairy and Food Manufacturing. Customers have also seen additional benefits to the installation and cleaner plant rooms.
